FreeCO2ast project

Pioneering Zero-Emission Maritime Solutions

FreeCO2ast

Innovative Collaboration for a Greener Future

Initiated in 2018 under the auspices of the PILOT-E scheme, the FreeCO2ast project represents a groundbreaking venture in the maritime industry. Spearheaded by a consortium comprising HAVILA Kystruten, SINTEF, HAV Group, and CMR Prototech, this ambitious project was backed by a substantial grant of 95 million NOK, aimed at revolutionizing marine propulsion systems.

Our primary objectives within FreeCO2ast are multifold:

  • To develop and certify a hydrogen-based propulsion system for HAVILA Kystruten, capable of zero-emission operations over extended distances.
  • To pioneer tools for simulator-based ship design, enhancing efficiency and environmental performance.
  • To gain profound insights into fuel cell technology, tank and control systems, and safety philosophies.
  • To explore hydrogen solutions across various maritime segments through our "Virtual Lab."
  • To conduct comprehensive market analyses for maritime zero-emission solutions.

Technical Milestones:

Our journey has led to the development of a robust 3.2MW hydrogen-based propulsion system, leveraging liquid hydrogen. Central to this innovation is a 3.5-ton LH2 tank, meticulously designed for maximum efficiency and safety. In May 2022, this revolutionary design received Preliminary Approval from DNV and NMA, marking a significant leap towards commercial application.

Methodology and Consortium Model:

A Synergy of Expertise

The FreeCO2ast project is characterized by a consortium model, bringing together industry leaders and research institutions. Key participants include Havyard Group, Havyard Design & Solutions, Havyard Ship Technology, Norwegian Electric Systems, SINTEF, CMR Prototech, and HAVILA Kystruten. This synergy fosters a holistic approach, integrating diverse expertise from ship design to hydrogen technology.
Achievements:

Navigating Towards a Sustainable Maritime Industry

One of our notable achievements is the successful zero-emission cruise of Havila Kystruten’s vessel, Havila Castor, through Geirangerfjord. This milestone, achieved four years ahead of governmental zero-emission requirements for world heritage fjords, underscores our commitment to sustainability and innovation. The FreeCO2ast project has not only addressed technical challenges but has also pioneered regulatory frameworks in collaboration with key maritime authorities.

Towards a Sustainable Maritime Future

At the heart of FreeCO2ast is our vision for a sustainable maritime future. By harnessing the potential of hydrogen fuel cells and fostering collaborative innovation, we are setting new benchmarks in maritime technology.  Our journey continues as we advance towards the final design stages, poised to offer cutting-edge, zero-emission solutions to the global maritime industry.

Together, we are navigating towards a cleaner, greener maritime world.
