FreeCO2ast: A Vision for Sustainable Maritime Travel 

Supported by the Research Council of Norway, Innovation Norway, and Enova under the PILOT-E scheme, FreeCO2ast is a project with a mission.

Our aim is to develop large, zero-emission vessels capable of covering long distances at higher speeds. This ambitious project, with a budget of 95 MNOK, is a testament to our expertise in creating sustainable maritime solutions.

PILOT-E: Accelerating the Journey
from Concept to Reality 

The PILOT-E program provides a unique platform for innovations like FreeCO2ast. It offers a "fast-track" approach from ideation to market, ensuring that new, environmentally friendly energy technologies are developed and commercialized swiftly. This aligns perfectly with our goals, as we strive to reduce emissions both in Norway and globally.

PILOT-E’s robust support system, encompassing everything from funding to expert guidance, is instrumental in bringing our visionary concepts to fruition. 

Our Expertise and Commitment 

Our participation in the FreeCO2ast project under the PILOT-E framework reflects our deep-seated expertise and commitment to R&D in maritime technologies. We have successfully developed a hydrogen-based energy system for large vessels, a major stride towards commercial viability. This system enables ships like Havila Kystruten’s new passenger ships to operate emission-free along the Norwegian coast for extended periods, marking a significant achievement in sustainable maritime transportation. 

Through these endeavors, we not only demonstrate our technical prowess but also our dedication to creating a more sustainable future. Our role in pioneering regulations and collaborating with authorities like the Norwegian Maritime Authority further cements our position as a leader in the maritime sector.

RETROFIT VESTLAND

Revolutionizing Maritime Operations with the Retrofit Vestland Project 

At HAV Hydrogen, we are spearheading the transformative Retrofit Vestland project, a strategic initiative aimed at reducing maritime emissions through innovative vessel retrofits. This project, funded by Vestland Fylkeskommune with a 1.3 million NOK grant, is a significant step towards sustainable maritime operations.

Project Scope and Collaboration 

Retrofit Vestland is a collaborative effort initiated by Ocean Hyway Cluster, involving stakeholders from the entire value chain. Our partners include industry leaders like Greensight AS, Havyard Leirvik, and HAV Hydrogen, among others. This broad coalition illustrates our commitment to working across value chains, both horizontally and vertically, embracing cooperation and competition for a shared future gain. 

Objective and Impact

Our aim is to retrofit existing vessels to operate on zero-emission fuels, addressing the challenges of cost, fuel, and infrastructure availability. This project is particularly focused on the offshore supply vessel segment in Vestland, identified for its significant potential for large-scale benefits. By leveraging Norway’s maritime and technological expertise, we aim to create new green jobs, products, and services, contributing added value to local communities and the global market. 

Our Approach to Collaborative Innovation 

The Retrofit Vestland project underscores our approach to collaborative innovation. By partnering with SINTEF, one of Norway's strongest expert environments, we integrate cutting-edge research into practical solutions.
